The Role of Fabrication in Architectural Design: A Collaborative Approach

Fabrication within the design process should not be perceived as a one-dimensional task where fabricators simply execute predetermined designs. Instead, fabricators play a pivotal role as key collaborators, working closely with architects to bring their design visions to life. The design process must be seen as a synergistic exercise between the architect and the fabricator. For this collaboration to succeed, fabricators must possess a deep understanding of design and have the internal resources needed to deliver optimal solutions.

Jeff Henry, CEO of CEI Materials, explains, "At CEI Materials, we refer to ourselves as modern fabricators, not just as a title, but as a reflection of who we are. We continuously expand our offerings to serve our customers better."

CEI Materials leverages cutting-edge technologies and customized applications to streamline the design-to-production flow. This automation enhances productivity and reduces errors, thanks to built-in checks and balances that minimize the risks typically associated with human oversight.

Q&A with Shaun Kovach, Design Manager at CEI Materials

How do you view the Design Department and its overall role within the CEI Design Process?

"The Design Department is essential at CEI, bridging architectural design intent with tangible products for our clients. Every project presents unique challenges, which we view as opportunities for growth, fostering an environment of innovation. This collaborative spirit makes CEI a leader in architectural panel fabrication."

What processes and systems have you created to better serve the architect's vision?

"We’ve implemented stringent quality assurance standards to ensure our products are not only well-designed but also functionally accurate. Our Design Engineers and Quality Assurance Managers work in tandem throughout the design phases to ensure we leave no stone unturned."

How do these features compare to what is available from other companies?

"Our collaborative environment enables us to achieve team and company goals more efficiently than many competitors. With a team of fifteen design professionals, each bringing unique skills and experiences, we are better equipped to address and solve complex challenges."

How important is technology to your process, and how do you stay current with the latest advancements?
"Technology is vital to our growth and innovation. Our team of Design Engineers is passionate about utilizing the latest industry-leading technologies to deliver superior products. Staying updated with technological advancements ensures that we continue to push boundaries and improve."

You have two locations and several remote individuals in your department. How does that all work?
"Managing teams across two locations and several remote engineers presents both challenges and benefits. By fostering open communication and collaboration, we harness the strengths of each team member, no matter their location. This setup allows CEI to access top talent nationwide, helping us tackle even the most complex projects."

What aspects of CEI’s Design Department are you most proud of?
"One of our proudest achievements is our investment in design automation, which has significantly increased throughput and expanded our capabilities. This investment has enabled us to take on larger, more complex projects while maintaining a high standard of quality and innovation."

What new technologies or improvements are you planning to incorporate into your future design vision?
"We are actively investing in additional automation technologies. Once fully implemented, these advancements will reduce lead times, increase throughput, and minimize design errors, further solidifying CEI's position as a premier fabricator of architectural panel systems."

Jeff Henry concludes, "At CEI Materials, we are committed to building a better mousetrap by integrating new technologies with our evolving internal processes. Our design department mirrors the actual building process, allowing us to continuously enhance speed, accuracy, and overall quality."
