CEI Materials Provides Metal Fabrication for LEED Gold-Certified Fallsgrove Plaza

The Fallsgrove Plaza commercial development, designed by DVA Architects, stands as a prime example of sustainable construction, achieving LEED Gold certification for its eco-friendly features. Completed in 2014, the $12 million, 120,000-square-foot complex includes a five-story commercial building and an adjoining parking structure. The building’s exterior blends high-efficiency glass, brick, and metal composite materials, with a standout feature being the impressive metal fin on its façade.

Developed by DC-based Lerner Enterprises, the building occupies a prestigious location near Shady Grove Hospital. The general contractor, HITT Contracting, emphasized the design team's goal of creating a visually striking building that complements its surroundings. As they described, “The design aimed to make the facility stand out without clashing with the existing architecture, using a mix of cold materials like glass and metal, alongside warmer elements such as brick, to create a timeless and sophisticated look."

CEI Materials played a crucial role in bringing this vision to life, fabricating over 10,000 square feet of metal composite material and 3,200 square feet of single-skin panels. Using CEI’s rear-ventilated R4000 rainscreen system, the panels were installed seamlessly, with additional support from installers at I.M. Labor. The precision and quality of the metal fabrication ensured that the building met its aesthetic and functional goals.

Despite the challenges of the project, HITT praised the collaboration between the experienced owner, design team, and construction partners. "Fallsgrove Plaza was a complex project from start to finish, but thanks to the dedication and expertise of everyone involved, the result met the developer’s requirements and the architect’s vision."

In addition to its striking design, Fallsgrove Plaza earned LEED Gold certification for its sustainable features. The building incorporates green materials sourced locally and regionally, and its water-efficient technologies reduce consumption by 40% compared to the average commercial building. The highly efficient curtain wall with low-e glass regulates indoor temperatures, while the building’s advanced ventilation system provides 30% more fresh air than standard, promoting a healthy, breathable environment for occupants.

Sustainability was a top priority for Lerner Enterprises throughout the project. Principal Mark D. Lerner emphasized the company’s commitment to green building, stating, “From the beginning of the design process, we partner with architects and engineers to push the envelope in green initiatives, limiting the environmental impact of our developments."

Fallsgrove Plaza showcases how sustainable design and expert fabrication, such as that provided by CEI Materials, can result in an environmentally responsible and visually stunning commercial building.
